Lower volume playback increases the potency. This sound space serves as a kind of portal to states of subtle awareness, and is perfect for the support of deeper sleeping as well.

magnify | Afterlight Steve Roach 2009 Timeroom Editions 21 (CD) Reviewed by Signal to NoiseAfter the stillness comes the AFTERLIGHT. Created in the Spring of 2009, in the afterglow of DYNAMIC STILLNESS, this long-form piece delivers the listener deep inside a multi-dimensional realm of forming clouds, an endless expanse with no boundaries or sense of temporal limits. Amorphous strands of harmonic lumina emerge and recede in a constant unfolding and reconfiguring state for the duration of this pure atmospheric suspension. This piece, along with its two companion releases DESTINATION BEYOND and IMMERSION: FOUR were created over the the same time period, and all share a common sense of breath, interconnection and pursuit of timelessness. Refined over several months, the piece was kept in constant low-volume playback during sleep, rest and times of reflection. The ongoing experience of living with the piece, and shaping it before its release into the world, has become a vital part of Steve's immersion process, going back to 1984's STRUCTURES FROM SILENCE.

Shapero, CD Services (UK), Electroambient Space, e|i magazine, Progression Magazine, Sonic Curiosity, Wind and WireFresh from concerts in 2002, this purely live double-CD release presents the current evolution of Steve's iconoclastic live experience captured at select U.S. dates earlier this year. For the duration of the first half of this year, Steve was on a constant program of performing on the road, then returning home for a few weeks at a time, setting up the live system in The Timeroom to create new sounds and reflect on previous concerts. This proved to be a refreshing alternative to the tour-'til-you-drop approach as the evolution of the music and soundworlds were greatly enhanced by this process.

magnify | At the Edge of Everything Steve Roach 2013 Timeroom Editions 28 (CD)AT THE EDGE OF EVERYTHING documents a peak moment in Steve Roach's live concert odyssey in Europe over a ten-year span. Recorded at the E-Live festival in The Netherlands, 2000, it represents the zenith of that period in his deep organic / tribal ambient sound, fused with a vibrant core of trance grooves and sequencer passages, shamanic electronic and atmospheric soundworlds. The entire concert is taken to the next level with guests Vidna Obmana on fujara (overtone flute) and Jeffrey Fayman on frame drum. The interaction on "Apparition Collaboration" especially shows the spirit of riding the edge, with Steve on didgeridoo and Vidna Obmana on fujara in full bloom. AT THE EDGE OF EVERYTHING is volcanic in its expression of the power of sound and the spontaneous, focused energy drawn from the moment. Equally impressive is the dynamic serpentine set as it emerges from what feels like the near future. Truly music for the time of now, as we are at the edge of everything.

Interconnected melodic-rhythmic forms bloom into a constant morphing state of kaleidoscopic change. Over several months before this piece was recorded, many directions were explored, motifs developed and structures were revealed evolving up to the moment when ELECTRON BIRTH was realized in its final creation. This stellar performance was recorded with a live audience in the studio-like environment of Tucson's Galactic Center on February 11, 2018. The DNA of MOLECULES OF MOTION, SPIRAL REVELATION and SKELETON KEYS along with the tradition of great German EM school masters is woven into this vibrant long-form journey. This is the next chapter in the evolution of Steve's rapturous long-form zone-worlds. Moving beyond the drone form, FADE TO GRAY is a consciousness-activating, 74-minute space of slowly churning, shifting harmonic alchemy. Subterranean sonics emerge rich with visual correlations, deep below the Earth's surface, monitored and amplified into an above-ground listening space. Steve approached FADE TO GRAY as if working on a large scale canvas or as a sculptor, shaping etheric material into sonic form through the tactile process offered by his analog hardware-based studio. Beyond the immersive environment experience, the music also functions on several levels. At low volume and infinite playback, FADE TO GRAY is highly effective for hypnogogic travel and sleep. At a higher volume, on a sound system that supports the emotional impact of full resolution playback, the sensation of a surreal, symphonic movement is magnified, expressing texture, mood, and emotion at a cellular level.

This conclusion to the FEVER DREAMS series expresses a craving to dwell within the places in-between, at the borderland of undefined perceptions and amber-colored emotions. Started two years ago, this episode of the Fever evolved simultaneously with the Immersion project, growing into a double CD. The languid, sensual and hypnotic aspects of the first two editions of the FEVER DREAMS series are distilled to a frothy surreal brew. Presented as a single CD, the first 74 minutes of the concert are experienced as it unfolded. Three distinct realms are seamlessly mapped out in this inspired set. The opening starts with a 25-minute piece of perpetual forward motion in the mode of DESTINATION BEYOND, created specially for the concert, carved from pure analog synths and sequencers. From here we experience an amazing interplay between didgeridoo players Dashmesh Khalsa, Brian Parnham, percussionist Byron Metcalf and Steve performing real-time looping, processing and mixing along with soundworlds, ocarina and voice. This passage is an all-out expression of shamanic ecstasy that boils over into the engulfing tribal trance state of "Thunder Walk" from the recent release DREAM TRACKER. The spirituality of sound is central within these emotional landscapes with infinite horizons. In the way a visual artist mixes their colors and utilizes the natural light-infused ambience of the studio to support the piece as it evolves, Roach initiated these mystical sonic states under the influence of the late hours at night. Within the shroud of natural darkness and a few low level lights in the studio supporting the creative flow, these paintings in the dark were born. Steve often finds parallels in his creative process to that of a painter or sculptor, and aspired in this direction before discovering electronic music as his main form of artist expression. PAINTING IN THE DARK presents an aesthetic that is unique to Roach's work, embracing the mystery and wonder of sound as a constant evolving companion to the ongoing bloom of consciousness.

An undercurrent of congruency between the pieces is consistently apparent in these projects and in this release, even though the pieces were created over a longer span of time and under unique and seemingly disparate situations. As a starting point, I will draw from a large pool of unreleased and lost tracks. It's like shuffling through a large box of puzzle pieces looking for the shapes and colors from which to begin telling a particular story that I'm discovering along the way. It's very much a mosaic, formed out of the richness that each piece or soundworld passage holds on its own. From there the combined resonance of the pieces starts to take over and fully reveals itself as a whole. Making the outcome more than simply a collection of pieces, this kind of process results in a structure, theme, and sonic storyline that could not be arrived at through other routes traveled on a tighter timeframe with specific intentions. -- Steve Roach, November 2004

At the same time, an overall atmosphere of tranquility permeates the listening space as each spiral meditation unwinds into the elegant beauty of the next piece, revealing delicate lattice-like melodic and rhythmic strands woven into intricate patterns. Created in the Timeroom in 2013, this is music to invigorate the heart, mind, spirit -- and imagination.

| The Desert Collection Volume One Steve Roach 2014 Timeroom Editions 30 (CD)The Desert Experience: This release started as a collection of desert-themed tracks sequenced for summer road trips between Arizona and California, sometimes in dark of night cloaked from the heat, other trips in the broad searing rays of the Summer sun. Drawing from over three decades of desert music, this magical blend creates a set that places one directly into the dramatic and emotive, immersive Southwest landscapes.

Through the passage of time, the evanescent nature of this atmosphere only grew more poignant and deeper in emotional resonance. As life continues to be fully lived, blooming outwards and simultaneously mirrored with the passing of family, friends and animal companions, these emotions aligned and called on me. In a five-day period leading up to my birthday on February 16 2017, I fully immersed in the feeling this time-echo delivered, realizing this long-form piece in totality.

magnify | CD out of stock | iTunes | Bandcamp | Traveler Steve Roach 2017 Timeroom Digital (CD)Released in 1983, TRAVELER is Steve's second solo and his first album on vinyl LP; a big accomplishment in and of itself back in the day. Recorded both in a large pro studio (José Feliciano's) and in the early Timeroom in Culver City California, this music revealed the young Steve Roach as a synthesist of limitless imagination and broad compositional depth. The thrust of his synthesized matrices evinces realms of austere metallic beauty, worlds yet to be explored, topographies hosting civilizations caught between the rugged girth of the past and the brilliance of a better future. Ideally, allow this music to simply flow over and through you. A travelogue of worlds both gorgeous and shadowed pieces of ambient expressionism that hint at the future of his vast explorations interface with ease. The pulsing title track "Traveler" is a quixotic exploration through a post-Schulze digi-zone of stormy synth riffs and sequencer majesty. Even the Tribal era in Steve's later work is birthed on pieces like T.B.C. and Mysteries Continue. Both NOW, Steve's debut release and TRAVELER launched Roach's qualitative talent onto an unsuspecting world presenting a harbinger of things to come in is massive body of work now expanding into its fourth decade. -- Darren Bergstein, ei

The remote and mysterious locations deep in Mexico's historic landscape, as well as the hallucinogenic terrain of the Sonoran desert in Southern Arizona, provide the ground where this music takes place. The musical elixir was created from a surreal blending of acoustic and electronic instruments, along with voice and location recordings. With strong shamanic undercurrents, it creates an opening to step through time and again. VINE ~ BARK & SPORE offers music as medicine for the soul. The music of Roach and Reyes acts as a transmitter of the attitudes that ancient cultures had towards music and the spiritual aspects of life, while merging with the currents of today.

magnify | Vortex Immersion Zone Steve Roach 2015 Timeroom Editions 36 (CD)The Dome Zone Within... Created at The Timehouse studio between 2013 and 2015, this ultra-deep zone was first inspired by plans to perform at the Los Angeles Center Studios' Vortex Dome in 2013. Entering this space created an immediate immersive experience, even with no music or visual stimulation within the dome. VORTEX IMMERSION ZONE was born from this geodesic, womb-like space in the same way a natural environment or magnificent cathedral inspires an artist to explore new places within. Over the course of time, portions of this immersion piece were presented live, which in turn would help to magnify how the piece would evolve in the studio. Additional new atmospheres created from the live mode and studio experiments continued to add to the potency and allure of this sonic space, shape-shifting the experience into a new depth as it was completed in late 2015.
