The Desert Experience:
This release started as a collection of desert-themed tracks sequenced for summer road trips between Arizona and California, sometimes in dark of night cloaked from the heat, other trips in the broad searing rays of the Summer sun. Drawing from over three decades of desert music, this magical blend creates a set that places one directly into the dramatic and emotive, immersive Southwest landscapes.
|Chasing the Dawn: Ultima Thule Ambient|
2006 Ultima Thule UTAM001 (CD)
Imported from Australia after three years in the making, the inaugural Ultima Thule CD has finally arrived! Ultima Thule is a popular long-running radio program airing Sydney and Adelaide, dedicated to pure ambient and electronic music. This collection is a 78-minute excursion into the realms of atmospheric ambience from the artists who have been consistently broadcast across the Australian city landscape. CHASING THE DAWN: ULTIMA THULE AMBIENT features a selection of previously-unreleased music by thirteen of the world's most acclaimed ambient composers, among them Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Tim Story, Jeff Greinke and Thom Brennan. Steve's piece was created just for this release, titled after the fantastic land and stone formations in the general area of Uluru (Ayers Rock) in central Australia. Steve spent time here during his extended Australia journeys.

This recording conjures up the desert vistas and the vast stark beauty of the American southwest through a collection of pieces that play like a soundtrack to a road trip through the Mojave Desert, Death Valley and Joshua Tree, California. All of these locales were the inspiration for the musicians during the creation of the music. Another important step into the western electronic sound forged by Steve over the past dozen years. "Easily among the finest electronic albums of the last decade." -- 5 stars -- ("Q" magazine UK Feb. '91)
