PHANTOMS is Forrest Fang's 9th solo album and the follow-up to his Projekt release, GONGLAND. Nearly eight years in the making, PHANTOMS builds on the gamelan-influenced soundscapes of its predecessor by weaving organic sounds of non-Western stringed and percussion instruments and filtering those sounds through a rich melodic tapestry of warm and vaporous atmospheres. Fang's subtly layered and continually evolving textures combine his Asian influences with his love of fractal algorithms that reflect the chaotic beauty of nature. The ambiences of PHANTOMS evoke a state of contemplation within a world in flux. The centerpiece of the album is a 23-minute ambient suite -- "The Hallucinations of Hung Tung" -- inspired by the otherworldly paintings of a Taiwanese fisherman and outsider artist.

Arctisonia is the seventh album in the superb discography of Jeffrey Koepper. Based on an arctic theme, this CD offers the listener seven tracks of frozen atmospheres, cold textures and icy forms, all realized with classic analogue synth sounds. Including gear by Moog, ARP, Sequential Circuits, Oberheim, Roland, Yamaha and many others from a bygone era, the equipment list reads like a keyboard catalog from the 70's and 80's. While Jean-Michel Jarre and Michael Garrison seem to hover over his music, Koepper communes with his machines in a fight against the notion that this genre belongs to history rather than the present. He knows well the territory of plugs, cables and jacks and crafts a pleasing palate of unique electronic tones. Upon this foundation a great deal of sonic architecture may be constructed.

Koepper uses a combination of ambient textures, sequencer rhythms and deep atmospheres to create these lush electronic structures. MOMENTIUM is Koepper's new solo release after his debut CD ETHEREA. On this one he amps-up the energy with a flow of pieces created around the sequencer as a tool to give the music momentum. Koepper is a long-time proponent of analog and hardware synths, thus allowing his hands-on approach to become essential in shaping the flow as it occurs. The first track alone is worth the price of admission, calling up the ghosts of Tangerine Dream in their glory days. Warm tones and hypnotic patterns intermix into a fine result throughout the entire set. Steve Roach was integral in the final arrangement, mastering and finishing treatments of MOMENTIUM.

The essential ingredients of ancient and contemporary shamanic trance states are fully activated in this highly potent new release. Byron carved out a collection of incredible trance grooves for nearly a year, eventually bringing in the prana-infused didgeridoo of Dashmesh Khalsa on every track. Steve joined on in early January 2010 and poured his heart and soul-drenched soundworlds into the six pieces, covering a full range of ecstatic dreamtime flow: rhythm, breath and expansion. An ambient hybrid of traditional Indonesian soundscapes and electronics. Originally released in 2000 on Italy's Amplexus label, Loren Nerell extends THE VENERABLE DARK CLOUD's original 22 minutes to over 69 minutes, culminating in a complete vision capturing a sound that Sequences described as "modern ambient drone music (that) melds with ancient tribal cultures to form something entirely new, sounding ages old".
In 2000, Glen Hammett wrote for The Raging Consciousness Desk, THE VENERABLE DARK CLOUD "is spectacular, creative, and a delight to listen. Enchanting! The sensation the listener comes away with is one of a sacred mysterious quality, and I found myself wanting more when it ended".
Sixteen years later, the wait is over. Capturing an ambient sound informed by Indonesian gamelan music, and the concept of animism, Loren remarks, "What would it be like to be a soul or spirit inside a gong? You would not think in human ways but maybe in gamelan tones. This album is how I imagine it would be to be that gong".
From the liner notes, Loren writes:
This project started back in 1998 when Stefano Gentile asked me to contribute to his Amplexus mini-CD ambient label. The timing was perfect: I had just finished my masters degree in ethnomusicology, it had been a while since I had any time to create music, and I was very eager to get back to creating again.
The first thing that came was the title; well, actually I stole the title. THE VENERABLE DARK CLOUD is the English translation of the name given to the UCLA Javanese gamelan ensemble "Kyai Mendung". I felt this title fit the mood of the music I was writing, plus I also had this concept for what the album was about. Indonesia is predominately Islamic, but underneath there are many layers of other beliefs including Animism, the belief that everything has a soul. This has filtered down into everything including gamelan ensembles; it is thought that the spirit of the ensemble resides in its largest gong. As an outsider, I was fascinated. I wondered, "What would it be like to be a soul or spirit inside a gong?" You would not think in human ways but maybe in gamelan tones. This album is how I imagine it would be to be that gong. "Within The Cloud" is how a gong would think created using only gamelan tones that I processed.
One unique aspect of the Amplexus concept that I found challenging was the short capacity of the little 3-inch CDs they released on; they held about 23 minutes rather than the 74 minutes on a standard CD. It was a challenge, but I found around 22 minutes of music to include. I felt and still feel it is the strongest work I have produced to date.
Fast forward about ten years; the CD is long out of print. Steve Roach suggested that I release the CD again but this time as a full-length version. I went back into my archives and found a couple of tracks that I did not include on the original release due to length. "Liquid Metal Statis" appeared on the Hypnos Compilation CD Weightless, Effortless and has been slightly remixed for this disc. The other was an alternative version of the song "Eclipse," now called "Another Cloud". Completing the vision are tracks "Tenganan Grove" and "Lambat Lane".

Loren Nerell creates a masterful release of deep ambient with SLOW DREAM, field recordings from the world of sleep. On his seventh solo release, Nerell's four lengthy tracks are all-encompassing sonic environments forged mainly from extremely processed location recordings made during his trips to Bali. Rich drones and shimmering highlights skirt over the organic textures, processed and layered into subtle, delicate resonant spaces. Glowing, amorphous drifts of sound create the impression of traveling along the supple contours of subterranean passageways. This SLOW DREAM takes ethereal shape as an exotic but compelling atmosphere that hovers between the waking and sleep state. When experienced at a lower volume and left to repeat play over the course of a few hours, the transportive effect of this soundscape is especially powerful and mind-altering.

Loren Nerell's dark and humid soundscape releases date back to his 1996 release LILIN DEWA, as well as the more recent INDONESIAN SOUNDSCAPES. TAKSU takes cues from both of these albums, blending environmental sounds he records during his Indonesian travels, and Balinese instruments together into a glowing, amorphous cloud of spine-tingling sound.

Given his inspired flair for ethnic music and affinity for travel, Loren Nerell is unquestionably the ideal candidate for producing an audio documentation of Indonesian culture. Compiled during a series of visits to Java and Bali between 1992 and 1997, INDONESIAN SOUNDSCAPES is a varied travel guide via intensive location recordings of native ceremonies, natural environments, and other places of interest. The most intriguing pieces tend to be the ceremonial entries such as the predawn sanctity of "Call to Prayer", the aggressive native percussion ensemble in "Galungan Ceremony", and most of all, the primal rage of gamelan monkey chants in "Kecak". Projekt re-releases Vidna Obmana's classic THE RIVER OF APPEARANCE with a bonus disc, the entire album performed by Oregon's Dreams in Exile. River was a high point of Obmana's early compositional style, presenting a minimal and serene flow utilizing sparse piano lines which intermingle with drifting keyboard loops and organic rainstick sounds. There is an overall harmonic unity on these 8 pieces, stripping dense walls back to reveal a slowly changing sound configuration. The second disc is not merely bonus tracks, but a complete re-creation of the original on traditional instruments.

After 10 years, his first official solo release has been re-released in a new way. Originally composed and recorded between December 1999 and April 2000, the original source and pre-master files were revisited, enhanced and remixed. A few brushstrokes were added and a melted down album mix "Forged From Silence" was created in March 2010. The result is a release that feels like it's from the near future, steeped in a heat-altered landscape that effectively pulls you in deeper with each listen. An auspcious release that stands the test of time, and a vital piece of tribal-ambient magic.

And so it goes on this latest cross-style journey courtesy of Bill Olien and Gary Johnson. FULL CIRCLE moves in and out of quiet ambient places, most tinged with that desert feel, vast and airy and soaring, but also grinds its way through some grittier environments. Resonant Drift is the Southern California-based duo Bill Olien and Gary Johnson. The tools of today's soundscape-based music -- synthesizers, guitars, percussion, ethnic instruments, field recordings, looping and studio processing -- all find an equal place within their work. Having met at one of Steve's Master Classes in 2008, Bill and Gary went on to collaborate on 2009's The Call, which received enthusiastic reviews and airplay in the Ambient community. Their new release Passages makes great strides forward in the duo's sound. This release has the feel of being made from the moment, while at the same time woven with layers of subtle innerplay and amorphous, shifting spaces. DISCIPLE is Mark Seelig's first solo project after his powerful contributions on MANTRAM and the WACHUMA'S WAVE project. On this beautiful and meditative CD, Mark fully immerses himself into the traditional Indian Raga styles through his flute and voice overtoning, Guest musicians from India join Mark as do Byron Metcalf on percussion and overall production. Steve provides tambora-inspired analog drones and mastering. The music on the album reflects Mark's 23 years of being a disciple, an initiated seeker. Recorded in three countries -- India, Germany, and the U.S. -- DISCIPLE mirrors Mark's long-lasting connection to these lands.

Through this system, a drum-pad can sound like a trumpet, violin, voice, or it can create a completely new sound. Though originally composed on computer, all the music on THE BIG PICTURE was played entirely with drumsticks. This album is a refreshing celebration of rhythm and melody. Omar Faruk Tekbilek (with Steve Roach)

Turkish master musician Omar Faruk Tekbilek drawns from Persian mysticism, the sounds of Azerbaijani folksong and classical Arabian belly dancing. He even pays tribute, on the song "Yalel", to the famed Egyptian singer Omm Kulthum. (Tekbilek himself is half Egyptian.) Working with many of the same musicians who have made such distinctive contributions to Tekbilek's earlier albums, he creates a kind of global music, a music that acknowledges Greek, Indian, and of course Turkish music, and attempts to find a common ground between all of these. Perhaps his greatest achievement on CRESCENT MOON is that the album is more than the sum of its parts: it consistently evokes the ecstatic trance of the Sufi dervishes, the biting winds of the desert at night, the rich and exotic scents of an Oriental market, and yet it does so without clearly staying in any one musical tradition.

This year-2000 release from the DÃ¼sseldorf-based husband and wife team known as Temps Perdu? brings the full gamut of ethno-electro tribal ambient obsessions into play. It's like a flowing ride along a snaking river, where ethnic influenced electronic trance grooves come and go, as do a plethora of synth textures, organic sounds and instruments. Evidence of an earlier trip to the Timeroom, along with the influence of Jorge Reyes and Suspended Memories, is undeniable but this not clone zone music, as they feel it in their own way, and bring an evocative voice to the tribal gathering.

TERRA INCOGNITA was recorded in the mid-90's; the sonic reference points of this period were Suspended Memories, Steve Roach's ethno-tribal period, and the work of Jorge Reyes. While more active in the 90's, this still holds its own with a sound that caught the ears of listeners worldwide.
