Augstein describes it as "dimensional fluid light and sound designed for visual meditation and atmospheres." Augstein's undulating, flowing light images in BOREALIS are enhanced by an etheric, transcendental music soundtrack from Steve Roach, David Parsons, A Produce, Ranga and Jody & Steve St. Clair, compiled by Dwight Loop, who also contributes music for the DVD. Steve has nearly 30 minutes of atmospheric pieces and excerpts from previously-released CD's on this ultra-chill DVD.

magnify | Angkor Kelly David 2006 Rocky Mountain Records RMR 0002 (CD) Produced by Steve RoachAfter his strong debut release BROKEN VOYAGE, electronic artist Kelly David presents a big stride forward in his sound design, composition and flow. Going further into the themes of exotic distant places, here he draws on the specter found in the forbidding Southeast Asian jungles and to a distant past when the mighty Khmer civilization ruled from an immense temple city called Angkor. In a similar way that David Parsons taps into an East Indian atmosphere and spiritual dimension of that region, Kelly uses harmonically rich textures and surreal sounds, along with ethnic-inspired rhythmic passages, to express a risky travelogue of mystery, impending vastness and danger of an area that is still being understood and explored on many levels today. Sonically, the CD was created primarily on analog instruments resulting in a warm and rich sound. Mastered by Steve Roach, and highly recommended.

| Broken Voyage Kelly David (with Steve Roach) 2002 Rocky Mountain Records (CD) Produced by Steve Roach Reviewed by Eclectic Earwig Reviews, KLEM, Sonic CuriosityColorado-based electronic artist Kelly David's debut CD sets course on an ambient-electro-tribal adventure. Drawing imagery from uncharted waters and travels between desolate islands in the South Pacific, the CD takes the shape of a soundtrack journey. Kelly's fascination with pure sound design combined with natural sound sources, mid tempo grooves along with deep textures lead straight to the heart of musical darkness... and light in an inviting sort of way. A strong debut by an artist who has been working quietly towards this release for several years. Mixed at the Timeroom by Steve Roach.

| Animism Forrest Fang 2012 Projekt PRO274 (CD) – Eco-Wallet Reviewed by Relaxed MachineryMulti-instrumentalist / electronic composer Forrest Fang has been creating his powerful blend of world instrument East-West-influenced sound art for over three decades. The pieces have the elegance and grace of "serious" composed music but the overarching feeling is pure, all-organic, and very human at the core. On his latest, ANIMISM, a long list of acoustic instruments and some synths are brought into play. The thick harmonic stew is created from a deep and heady slow boil of acoustic and electronic sources, treated with extreme audio processing, finding a shared cellular bond after what feels like a long marinade in deep reverberating spaces. Highly recommended!

This new release could easily be filed in the Immersion category. Five pieces hover and slowly shift in a cloud-like movement. The pure texture is created from a strata of sinuous harmonic layers. The ambiguous source of the of sound is rich, organic and at times other-worldly.

| Phantoms Forrest Fang 2009 Projekt PRO230 (CD)PHANTOMS is Forrest Fang's 9th solo album and the follow-up to his Projekt release, GONGLAND. Nearly eight years in the making, PHANTOMS builds on the gamelan-influenced soundscapes of its predecessor by weaving organic sounds of non-Western stringed and percussion instruments and filtering those sounds through a rich melodic tapestry of warm and vaporous atmospheres. Fang's subtly layered and continually evolving textures combine his Asian influences with his love of fractal algorithms that reflect the chaotic beauty of nature. The ambiences of PHANTOMS evoke a state of contemplation within a world in flux. The centerpiece of the album is a 23-minute ambient suite -- "The Hallucinations of Hung Tung" -- inspired by the otherworldly paintings of a Taiwanese fisherman and outsider artist.

| Arctisonia Jeffrey Koepper 2011 Air Space Records (CD)Arctisonia is the seventh album in the superb discography of Jeffrey Koepper. Based on an arctic theme, this CD offers the listener seven tracks of frozen atmospheres, cold textures and icy forms, all realized with classic analogue synth sounds. Including gear by Moog, ARP, Sequential Circuits, Oberheim, Roland, Yamaha and many others from a bygone era, the equipment list reads like a keyboard catalog from the 70's and 80's. While Jean-Michel Jarre and Michael Garrison seem to hover over his music, Koepper communes with his machines in a fight against the notion that this genre belongs to history rather than the present. He knows well the territory of plugs, cables and jacks and crafts a pleasing palate of unique electronic tones. Upon this foundation a great deal of sonic architecture may be constructed.

| Quadranteon Jeffrey Koepper 2009 Air Space Records (CD)QUADRANTEON is Jeffrey Koepper's latest solo release. Like his previous albums, it is composed entirely with vintage analog synths, drum machines and analog sequencers. With this album Koepper explores deep emotional ambient worlds. Divided into four movements / parts, it is an emotional electronic journey through four moods. Koepper uses a combination of ambient textures, sequencer rhythms and deep atmospheres to create these lush electronic structures. QUADRANTEON has a very organic flowing feel between its parts, and touches on deep ambience as well as intense sequential rhythms.

| Sequentaria Jeffrey Koepper 2008 Air Space Records (CD) Reviewed by Electroambient SpaceSEQUENTARIA is Jeffrey Koepper's new solo release, and like his previous ETHEREA and MOMENTIUM, SEQUENTARIA relies completely on classic analog synths, drum machines and analog sequencers to construct an organic melodic-rythmic-sequential interweave. The overall feeling is playful and inspired, with a hint of nostalgia as the warmth of vintage analogue sounds and sequences emerge in forms that evolve from the interactive hands-on approach these instruments offer. Fans of classic Jean-Michel Jarre and Tangerine Dream will be especially interested in this release. Mastered by Steve Roach.

| Momentium Jeffrey Koepper (with Steve Roach) 2006 Air Space Records 002 (CD) Produced by Steve RoachMOMENTIUM is Koepper's new solo release after his debut CD ETHEREA. On this one he amps-up the energy with a flow of pieces created around the sequencer as a tool to give the music momentum. Koepper is a long-time proponent of analog and hardware synths, thus allowing his hands-on approach to become essential in shaping the flow as it occurs. The first track alone is worth the price of admission, calling up the ghosts of Tangerine Dream in their glory days. Warm tones and hypnotic patterns intermix into a fine result throughout the entire set. Steve Roach was integral in the final arrangement, mastering and finishing treatments of MOMENTIUM.

| Slow Dream Loren Nerell 2012 Projekt PRO271 (CD) Produced by Steve Roach Reviewed by Relaxed MachineryLoren Nerell creates a masterful release of deep ambient with SLOW DREAM, field recordings from the world of sleep. On his seventh solo release, Nerell's four lengthy tracks are all-encompassing sonic environments forged mainly from extremely processed location recordings made during his trips to Bali. Rich drones and shimmering highlights skirt over the organic textures, processed and layered into subtle, delicate resonant spaces. Glowing, amorphous drifts of sound create the impression of traveling along the supple contours of subterranean passageways. This SLOW DREAM takes ethereal shape as an exotic but compelling atmosphere that hovers between the waking and sleep state. Given his inspired flair for ethnic music and affinity for travel, Loren Nerell is unquestionably the ideal candidate for producing an audio documentation of Indonesian culture. Compiled during a series of visits to Java and Bali between 1992 and 1997, INDONESIAN SOUNDSCAPES is a varied travel guide via intensive location recordings of native ceremonies, natural environments, and other places of interest. The most intriguing pieces tend to be the ceremonial entries such as the predawn sanctity of "Call to Prayer", the aggressive native percussion ensemble in "Galungan Ceremony", and most of all, the primal rage of gamelan monkey chants in "Kecak". Thoroughly effective are the tracks of natural ambience found in the self-explanatory "Frogs", "Morning Insect Sounds", "Evening Sounds", and "Morning Rain". -- Adam Bialek, Outburn Magazine

| Lilin Dewa Loren Nerell 1996 Side Effects DFX 26 (CD)Nerell is an American who became spellbound by Bali and Java's gamelan music after a chance encounter with it over 20 years ago. He merges field recordings of said music with his own studio manipulaitons (via synths and samplers), but only skilled ears could tell which is which. Nerell's tools include various Indonesian gongs, rain-stick, dholak and slenthem. LILIN DEWA should strike a resonant chord with Westerners receptive to contemplative musics, even if they don't have a clue about gamelan. The moan-and-groan drone of "Galungan" has ritualistic overtones that induce an uneasy, peaceful feeling, like being isloated in a desert. "Borobudur" is akin to Paul Schütze's cinematic take on Southeastern Asian ambience. Muted chanting and cricketsong add to the song's mesmerizing chill. "Bamboo, Iron, Resin, Bronze" is one of the most gorgeous and euphoric pieces of music since Don Cherry's "Brown Rice" (1975), conjuring the image of a stately glide down an Indoesian river. -- Dave Segal, Alternative Press

| The Broken Silence Brian Parnham 2010 Floating Point Records (CD)Ambient-electronic artist Brian Parnham has created a series of highly nuanced, beautifully recorded evocative tribal-ambient releases over the years, including MANTLE on our own steveroach.com label. After 10 years, his first official solo release has been re-released in a new way. Originally composed and recorded between December 1999 and April 2000, the original source and pre-master files were revisited, enhanced and remixed. A few brushstrokes were added and a melted down album mix "Forged From Silence" was created in March 2010. The result is a release that feels like it's from the near future, steeped in a heat-altered landscape that effectively pulls you in deeper with each listen. An auspcious release that stands the test of time, and a vital piece of tribal-ambient magic.

| Full Circle Resonant Drift 2013 Flow Space Music / FloBob Music (CD)The rising moan of an ominous electronic wind welcomes you to the first of several sound-worlds on Resonant Drift's new release, FULL CIRCLE, but don't worry; it quickly rectifies itself into a lighter and brighter thing, made of rich pads like the rising sun describing some wide open desert-ambient vista. And so it goes on this latest cross-style journey courtesy of Bill Olien and Gary Johnson. FULL CIRCLE moves in and out of quiet ambient places, most tinged with that desert feel, vast and airy and soaring, but also grinds its way through some grittier environments. Resonant Drift have always had an experimental edge that finds its way into the flow, and it's used here to temper the journey.

| Passages Resonant Drift 2011 Flow Space Music / FloBob Music (CD) Produced by Steve RoachResonant Drift is the Southern California-based duo Bill Olien and Gary Johnson. The tools of today's soundscape-based music -- synthesizers, guitars, percussion, ethnic instruments, field recordings, looping and studio processing -- all find an equal place within their work. Having met at one of Steve's Master Classes in 2008, Bill and Gary went on to collaborate on 2009's The Call, which received enthusiastic reviews and airplay in the Ambient community. Their new release Passages makes great strides forward in the duo's sound. This release has the feel of being made from the moment, while at the same time woven with layers of subtle innerplay and amorphous, shifting spaces. The ten pieces and passages find inspiration in part from the challenges faced when traversing a path to enlightenment. Mastering and sonic enhancements by Steve Roach.

| Disciple Mark Seelig (with Steve Roach) 2005 (CD)DISCIPLE is Mark Seelig's first solo project after his powerful contributions on MANTRAM and the WACHUMA'S WAVE project. On this beautiful and meditative CD, Mark fully immerses himself into the traditional Indian Raga styles through his flute and voice overtoning, Guest musicians from India join Mark as do Byron Metcalf on percussion and overall production. Steve provides tambora-inspired analog drones and mastering. The music on the album reflects Mark's 23 years of being a disciple, an initiated seeker. | Crescent Moon Omar Faruk Tekbilek (with Steve Roach) 1998 Celestial Harmonies 13176 (CD)Turkish master musician Omar Faruk Tekbilek drawns from Persian mysticism, the sounds of Azerbaijani folksong and classical Arabian belly dancing. He even pays tribute, on the song "Yalel", to the famed Egyptian singer Omm Kulthum. (Tekbilek himself is half Egyptian.) Working with many of the same musicians who have made such distinctive contributions to Tekbilek's earlier albums, he creates a kind of global music, a music that acknowledges Greek, Indian, and of course Turkish music, and attempts to find a common ground between all of these. Perhaps his greatest achievement on CRESCENT MOON is that the album is more than the sum of its parts: it consistently evokes the ecstatic trance of the Sufi dervishes, the biting winds of the desert at night, the rich and exotic scents of an Oriental market, and yet it does so without clearly staying in any one musical tradition.

| Earth Story Temps Perdu? 2000 Amplexus AX01 (CD)This year-2000 release from the Düsseldorf-based husband and wife team known as Temps Perdu? brings the full gamut of ethno-electro tribal ambient obsessions into play. It's like a flowing ride along a snaking river, where ethnic influenced electronic trance grooves come and go, as do a plethora of synth textures, organic sounds and instruments. Evidence of an earlier trip to the Timeroom, along with the influence of Jorge Reyes and Suspended Memories, is undeniable but this not clone zone music, as they feel it in their own way, and bring an evocative voice to the tribal gathering.

(with Steve Roach) 1995 Timebase TIME3 (CD) Produced by Steve RoachTemps Perdu? are a husband and wife team based in Düsseldorf, Germany with a love for creating ethno-electronic moods. | Transmuting Currents John Vorus 2006 (CD) Produced by Steve Roach Reviewed by Electroambient Space, HypnagogueTRANSMUTING CURRENTS is an outstanding debut by ambient-electronic and accomplished didgeridoo artist John Vorus. John has been patiently evolving his sound and ambient sound creation approach since the 90's. Now we get to share in his travels with this debut release. Presented as a continuous blend of electro-acoustic atmospheres, natural sounds, hypnotic beatscapes and didgeridoo rhythms, all boiled down into a delicately simmering aquatic tidepool oozing with audio lifeforms melting from track to track like a balm for mind. The mixing and co-production was performed by Steve Roach in his Arizona based Timeroom studio during an intensive 5-day marathon session in 2005. Framing this sonic statement with a feeling of genuine artistic commitment and vision, the disc is packaged in an elegant custom-made die-cut fiber board CD wallet with slipcase, and printed using a special 6-color process. This is a real beauty to hold and to hear, and a must-have for connoisseurs of deep organic ambient.
