| Animism Forrest Fang 2012 Projekt PRO274 (CD) – Eco-Wallet Reviewed by Relaxed MachineryMulti-instrumentalist / electronic composer Forrest Fang has been creating his powerful blend of world instrument East-West-influenced sound art for over three decades. The pieces have the elegance and grace of "serious" composed music but the overarching feeling is pure, all-organic, and very human at the core. On his latest, ANIMISM, a long list of acoustic instruments and some synths are brought into play. The thick harmonic stew is created from a deep and heady slow boil of acoustic and electronic sources, treated with extreme audio processing, finding a shared cellular bond after what feels like a long marinade in deep reverberating spaces. Highly recommended!

| Cities in Fog 2 Jeff Greinke 2011 Projekt ARC010b (CD)The seeds for this project were sown in early 1995, when Naut Humon (of Sombient Records) invited me to contribute music to a compilation (the first part of a trilogy) entitled Throne of Drones. After accepting this offer, I found myself thinking of musical terrain I had all but abandoned some years earlier. I subsequently composed music for the compilation, as well as for the second part of the trilogy, that strongly reminded me of my earlier work. Out of this renewed interest in exploring such musical landscapes came the notion of making, 10 years later, a sequel to my first album, Cities in Fog.

The two-CD Magnum Opus is perhaps the most important, widely known and highly respected release in Steve Roach's vast body of work. it serves as an essential benchmark within the Ambient-Ethno-Atmospheric genre. DREAMTIME RETURN still sounds like a transmission from the near future and the very distant past. Roach's travels in the Australian outback, along with studies of the Aboriginal Dreamtime, and his desert walkabouts in California were the lifeblood for this recording which still defies the boundaries of genre classification 17 years after its release... | Dust to Dust Steve Roach, Roger King 1998 Projekt PRO79 (CD) Reviewed by AmbiEntrance, Brett Neely, John Pemble, Alternative Press, CounterPunch, Illinois Entertainer, MuzeWestern Music in the truest sense. It is a bold step in a new direction: Where sounds paint pictures with a range of colors drawn from the land, where stories are told with the instruments of old and new pioneers. Guitars, harmonicas and washboard rhythms find their place next to a wagon full of electronics. This is the music, and even more the soundtrack, to the lingering ghosts and the lost and not-so-forgotten dreams of the restless souls driven to "Go West by God!" The story shifts between the present and the recent past when a dust trail was the only road west. The rails were freshly laid, still wet with sweat and blood. For better or worse, hopes and dreams turned real in the vast southwestern deserts, becoming a metaphor for a clean slate and a better life.

| Dynamic Stillness Steve Roach 2009 Projekt PRO228 (CD) – 2-CD Reviewed by Echoes Radio, Guts Of Darkness, MusicTAP, Sonic CuriosityDYNAMIC STILLNESS is a vast new work that has progressed over the past three years, evolving in its own time alongside the many other releases that were created and released during this period. The opening for these pieces was accessed through long periods of solitude at Steve's high desert studio and beyond. This environment was essential for informing the inner breath of this work and revealing a mastery within the art of original sound creation, bold harmonic structures, silence and sonic space. DYNAMIC STILLNESS reaches into a realm of amorphous soundworlds filled with a sense of unresolved expansion and mystery, blooming into cloudlike form.

| Eztica Soriah 2011 Projekt PRO264 (CD)EZTICA, brethren follow up to 2009's ATLAN, draws a heavy, hungry first breath like that of the first man Quetzalcoatl created from maize. Soriah's virtuoso Tuvan throat-singing, Central Asian stringed instruments and hand percussion is perfectly melded with the neo-ancient airs of Ashkelon Sain's exquisite darkwave guitars, celestial electronics, and hypnotizing poly-rhythms. EZTICA has its roots in the ceremonial: ritualism, shamanism, butoh. It is a deeply organic experience, the voice drawing out the primordial spell, touching the earth, reaching for the sky. Captivating percussive sections with driven vocals glide effortlessly across windswept steppes, while otherworldly overtones hang like clouds in a frosted mountain range, all amid deep expanses of slowly shifting, mesmerizing tones. And when the Quetzalcoatl Kundalini of Soriah's lyrical throat singing fires down the spine, everything goes astral.

The music's foundation is built upon long mid-tempo hybrid grooves with strong bass elements created from a combination of acoustic and electronic means. Steve Roach's atmospheric and loop-spun melodic guitar textures rise and fall, intermix with his synth and computer alchemy to create an aura of complex emotional import. It is an astonishing series of recordings. At times I found myself facing the darkest of the dark in the collective unconscious. Just as I thought I had reached the edge of where I could go in my voyaging, a tonal shift would occur and carry me into a delicious and heart-achingly beautiful space of unparalleled hope and faith. These recordings are both initiatory, and a veritable soul-retrieval in this time of widespread soul loss. In essence, this is healing sound. | Mystic Chords & Sacred Spaces, Parts 3 & 4 Steve Roach 2003 Projekt PRO143 (CD, Poster) Reviewed by Sputnik MusicMYSTIC CHORDS & SACRED SPACES is truly among the creme de la creme of Steve's distinct work. It is an astonishing series of recordings. At times I found myself facing the darkest of the dark in the collective unconscious. These recordings are both initiatory, and a veritable soul-retrieval in this time of widespread soul loss. In essence, this is healing sound. | Nada Terma Steve Roach, Byron Metcalf, Mark Seelig 2008 Projekt PRO222 (CD) Reviewed by e/i magazine, Electroambient Space, Guts Of Darkness, Musique Machine, Sonic CuriosityNADA TERMA merges the boundaries of ambient, world music and sacred-meditative styles. On NADA TERMA (translated as "discovering spiritual treasures through the world of sound") East Indian tonalities blend with Sufi-like trance percussion immersed in atmospheres, drifts and drones, arriving at a state of relaxed, focused awareness. The continuously-woven 73-minute piece is sequenced into seven discrete segments, perfect for any listener looking for extended states of awareness, creative enhancement, yoga, bodywork, and deep listening.
Following upon the groundbreaking work of 2006's MANTRAM, NADA TERMA is the second Projekt collaboration between Arizona's Steve Roach and Byron Metcalf with Germany's Mark Seelig. On NADA TERMA they reach deeper into the mystical / spiritual realm, presenting a blend of diverse worlds skillfully combined in an organic fashion. Deep-trance frame drums, clay pots and percussion meet with harmonic overtone vocals (akin to Tuvan throat singers) and the yearning sounds of the stringed Indian Dilruba, and East Indian bansuri flute, bringing a melodic and spiritual-contemplative highlight to the release. All of this exists within an enigmatic world of shadow and shifting light developed by way of artful enhancements and processing of the acoustic instruments. These complements are part of a constant, slowly breathing subtext of drones and atmospheres in which the entire experience lives.

magnify | Nightbloom Steve Roach, Mark Seelig 2010 Projekt PRO248 (CD) Reviewed by Richard Gürtler, Richard Gürtler, HypnagogueProlific ambient innovator Steve Roach teams with Ph.D. shamanic practitioner / musician Mark Seelig to create a long-form piece of space-opening sound magic. Like the many fragrant and beautiful night-blooming plants which are host to mind-altering qualities, this 70-minute experience slowly blooms outwards with Mark's vocal harmonic and Tuva-style overtoning intertwining within Steve's zones and "terra" grooves. A slow motion magical blend is created in this nocturnal mist-filled realm. The power of the human voice is drawn forth in a primordial understanding and finds a perfect fusion with subterranean heartbeats, drones and zones swelling from the harmonic soil, gently urging the Nightblooming to increase its potency and allure.

| Phantoms Forrest Fang 2009 Projekt PRO230 (CD)PHANTOMS is Forrest Fang's 9th solo album and the follow-up to his Projekt release, GONGLAND. Nearly eight years in the making, PHANTOMS builds on the gamelan-influenced soundscapes of its predecessor by weaving organic sounds of non-Western stringed and percussion instruments and filtering those sounds through a rich melodic tapestry of warm and vaporous atmospheres. Fang's subtly layered and continually evolving textures combine his Asian influences with his love of fractal algorithms that reflect the chaotic beauty of nature. The ambiences of PHANTOMS evoke a state of contemplation within a world in flux. The centerpiece of the album is a 23-minute ambient suite -- "The Hallucinations of Hung Tung" -- inspired by the otherworldly paintings of a Taiwanese fisherman and outsider artist.

| POD As Lonely as Dave Bowman (Sam Rosenthal) 2007 Projekt PRO195 (CD)POD is a fascinating new pure deep-dark-ambient release from darkwave maven Sam Rosenthal, founder and owner of Projekt and black tape for a blue girl. The isolation of deep space and the plight of film "2001" character Dave Bowman provides part of the sonic psychodrama of this mercurial mood piece. The sound is muted, consistent and distant as it seems to call out like some kind of haunting searchlight in the deep pockets of space. Perfect for late night excursions in the remote corners of cyberspace and beyond. (Note: This is the non-limited edition in a standard-size Digipak.)

| Silent Currents: Live at Star's End Erik Wøllo 2011 Projekt PRO262 (CD)The 2-CD SILENT CURRENTS showcases a different side of Erik Wøllo's sound. Here he explores fascinating electronic / ambient landscapes with slow-motion structures, surreal soundscapes and floating currents. Drawn from two separate live radio broadcasts, 104 minutes of music traverse a more ambient, atmospheric and textural side than experienced on his other albums. Recorded in the studio of the famous Star's End radio show in Philadelphia, these performances from 2002 and 2007 are each a disc-long continuous piece with several chapters. With more focus on the deep drones than on melody and rhythm, zones drift and morph, organically flowing into each other. Layers of electronics and processed sound combine with light touches of electric guitar melody floating on top. Quiet, sparse and gentle electronic music with ambient passages mix with occasions of sequencer pulses.

| Slow Dream Loren Nerell 2012 Projekt PRO271 (CD) Produced by Steve Roach Reviewed by Relaxed MachineryLoren Nerell creates a masterful release of deep ambient with SLOW DREAM, field recordings from the world of sleep. On his seventh solo release, Nerell's four lengthy tracks are all-encompassing sonic environments forged mainly from extremely processed location recordings made during his trips to Bali. Rich drones and shimmering highlights skirt over the organic textures, processed and layered into subtle, delicate resonant spaces. Glowing, amorphous drifts of sound create the impression of traveling along the supple contours of subterranean passageways. This SLOW DREAM takes ethereal shape as an exotic but compelling atmosphere that hovers between the waking and sleep state. When experienced at a lower volume and left to repeat play over the course of a few hours, the transportive effect of this soundscape is especially powerful and mind-altering.

| Space and Time An Introduction to the Soundworlds of Steve Roach Steve Roach 2003 Projekt PRO151 (CD) Reviewed by John Shanahan, Bert Strolenberg, Sonic CuriositySPACE AND TIME offers a unique overview of the nearly 20 years of groundbreaking recordings from noted ambient pioneer Steve Roach. Excerpting tracks from his 13 Projekt CD's, Roach hand-selected and mixed these pieces into a perfect flow which serves as an ideal insight into his vast recorded history. "Space" and "time" are two themes that run constant in all Roach's music. Rich with emotion and nuance, his sound creations evoke a strong sense of space and atmosphere while simultaneously altering the perception of time within that space. From the expansive, time-suspending landscapes reflected in releases such as 1984's STRUCTURES FROM SILENCE and 2003's MYSTIC CHORDS & SACRED SPACES to the fire breathing, rhythmic-shamanic expressions woven from all things electric and organic on 1989's DREAMTIME RETURN and 2000's THE SERPENT'S LAIR, Roach has earned his position in the international pantheon of major ambient-atmospheric-electronic artists.
